(EN, 8/9/93, pg. 17)
Fujitsu has demonstrated a line of high-speed three-dimensional graphics
Sun-based accelerators claiming the world's fastest maximum rendering
performance of 8 million polygons/sec.
***********************************************************
HP ARTICLES
***********************************************************
872.
** HEWLETT POST 44% RISE IN NET 3RD QUARTER
(WSJ, 8/18/93, pg. A3)
Hewlett-Packard's profit rose 44% in the fiscal third quarter, but order
growth in some big overseas markets slowed sharply and earnings didn't
meet Wall Street expectations. HP also reported a sharp rise in inventories
and an increase in selling costs.
873.
** MANAGING DOCUMENTS THE MULTIMEDIA WAY
(CW c/s, 8/11/93, pg. 16)
Among the first Seagram facilities to try out a new document management
system will be an accounts payable department. The data is entered into a
Sybase database running on an HP 9000. The image is stored on an optical
server, which is now a Sun workstation, but will soon be replaced by an HP
9000 server.
874.
** COMPUTERVISION HAS CADDS 5.4 FOR HP-UX - NT, ALPHA
AND OTHER PORTS TO FOLLOW
(UGX, 8/9/93, pg. 2)
Computervision choose the HP 9000 series 700 as the first port for its new
release of CADDS a computer-aided design and manufacturing package.
Computervision and HP will jointly market the product, calling themselves
the "PowerTeam". According to Dataquest, HP leads the field in selling
workstations to mechanical engineers, commanding a 30.1% share of the
market, ahead of Sun at 20.5%.
875.
** INTEL'S LOSING STATUS AT STRATUS
(IW, 8/16/93, pg. 54)
By late 1994 or early 1995, Stratus plans to replace the Intel i860 RISC
processor used in its systems with HP's PA-RISC microprocessors. The
switch to PA-RISC is a result of that chip's wider acceptance in the market
and uncertainty at Stratus in regard to how much longer Intel plans to
develop its RISC microprocessor.

876.
** AMBRA LEVERAGES BLUE LIGHTNING, INTEL OEM DEALS
(EN, 8/9/93, pg. 15)
Ambra Computer Corp., IBM's new PC business unit, made its debut by

EXPECTED - BETA VERSION OF MACH MICROKERNEL DUE
WITHIN 60 DAYS
(UGX, 8/9/93, pg. 6)
The first PowerPC 601 RISC-based machine was previewed by IBM. The
RS/6000 workstation was shown with an entry graphics adapter that
provides two-dimensional graphics performance and with full software-
enabled advanced three-dimensional graphics function. IBM will introduce
the powerPC at Unix Expo with prices starting at $9,000.
878.
** EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
(IW, 8/9/93, pg. 8)
IBM announced the formation of its Environmental Health and Safety
Technology Services. A unit of IBM's industrial division, the new services
group, will help corporations manage their environment, health and safety
processes to meet regulations such as pollution control.

** ANNIE GETS HER ANTITRUST GUN
(BW, 8/23/93, pg. 23)
On July 28, the Justice Dept. made the unusual request for documents in the
FTC's case against Microsoft. The FTC had been probing alleged unfair
business practices at Microsoft for three years but deadlocked a week
earlier. A formal investigation hasn't been launched, but the bets are on
that Anne Bingaman, the new head of the Justice Dept.'s Antitrust Div., will
pursue the case.

880.
** SOFTWARE
(IW, 8/16/93, pg. 10)
NCR formed alliances with two software development firms to augment its

They scale from 1 to 16 processors in the initial release and will include up

Sun will embrace SGI's Open GL graphics standard just as IBM, NEC,
DEC and other hardware vendors are demonstrating systems supporting
Open GL.
883.
** SINGLE CHIP SPARCS WITH 24-BIT GRAPHICS ON BOARD BY
1995
(UGX, 8/9/93, pg. 7)
In Sun's last fiscal year, a full 21% of Sun's revenues came from Japan. A
Sun spokesman predicted CPU speeds up to four times faster and up to
1,000 times the system capacity and scalability by 1995.
884.
** THE UNSETTLED EMPIRE OF THE SUN
(IW, 8/9/93, pg. 54)
"Sun has fallen off the price/performance curve, in part for failing to keep
Sparc up to the value offered by others, " asserts Tom Kucharvy of Summit
Strategies. For Sun, NT could not have come at a worse time. Sun has its
hands full attempting to convince customers to move to a new version of its
operating system and fending off competitors who are topping the price-
performance of its workstations and servers.

balance sheets in the computer industry, Wang's CEO said. The improved
balance sheet reflects the conversion of $451 million of unsecured long-
term debt to equity and $60 million in new investment. It will have about
$200 million in cash and marketable securities, equal to 20% of assets and
double the average for computer-hardware concerns.

** EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
(IW, 8/9/93, pg. 10)
A group of companies - including MasterCard, Citicorp, American Express,
Visa, IBM, AT&T, Microsoft, and Apple - created the Smart Card Forum, a
cross-industry effort to promote the use of smart-card technology for
payment, transit, health care, identification, and security applications.
888.
** WANTED: TECHNICAL SKILLS
(BC, 8/93, pg. 14)
Skilled technical employees, including information technology people, are
hard to come by and could become an even rarer commodity during the
next five years. A study cites projections that by the year 2000 there will
be 400,000 fewer science and engineering graduates than job openings
requiring that kind of expertise.
889.
** CIO SURVIVOR'S GUIDE
(BC, 8/93, pg. 17)
Successful CIOs share several traits: They have a good relationship with
their CEO, they are sensitive to their organization's values and priorities,
they work to create a vision for information technology's contribution to the
business and they actively strive for credibility by providing reliable
systems.
890.
** DATA HIGHWAYS - SILICONNECTED VALLEY
(IW, 8/16/93, pg. 22)
More than 40 companies based in and around Silicon
Valley have banded together to form Smart Valley, a non-profit
organization that will attempt to build a giant network linking local area
networks operated by corporations, schools, health care facilities and
government buildings. Chairman of Smart Valley, John Young, former
CEO of HP, says "If there's any place that can show us how to use
technology to compete effectively with the rest of the world, it's here."
891.
** THE MAKING OF THE CIO, 1993
(IW, 8/16/93, pg. 64)
CIOs hired within the past year can expect to stay in their current job
between 18 and 24 months - slightly longer than the shelf life of a box of
Shredded Wheat. In effect, CIOs, like politicians, need to consider re-
election a full-time job.
